Vermice describes what it's like to be an oblivious kid. He is a description of innocence. But it's a joke, and so instead of just being a naked cherub he wears a diaper. That signifies the disadvantages of innocence. He also has an ape-like stance, with long arms. That's because he is man, before the fall. Vermice in the apple tree is a poetic analogy for the womb.
