Verbal Tonic

As sleep approaches, madness rules
And stories made for sleepy fools
Who wait with patience for simple tales
The verbal tonic for mental ails

  1. I'm trying to wrap my head around this... are the crazy stories curing the mental ails?

  2. The suggestion is that stories provide subconcious benefits to the listener, even if they are nonsensical and even if the listener is too sleepy to consciously remember them. And there is science to back up this idea:

Fairy stories instruct the subconscious or preconscious mind with important lessons. According to world renowned child psychologist, the late Bruno Bettelheim , children universally recognize the meanings and lessons subconsciously and preconsciously.
